She attended Stanford University and earned an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Master_of_Fine_Arts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MFA<\/a> in fiction at the University of Michigan. Her acclaimed first novel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/534018\/the-mothers-by-brit-bennett\/9780399184529\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Mothers<\/em><\/a>, was published in 2016, when she was 26. Her follow-up, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=59715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Vanishing Half<\/em><\/a>, has spent the past three weeks in the top five of the <em>New York Times<\/em> bestseller list and the screen rights have been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=59890\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">optioned by HBO in a seven-figure deal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HBO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HBO<\/a> had to outbid 17 rival TV companies in the race to adapt your book for the screen. How does that feel?<\/strong><br \/>\nLast week was truly the wildest week of my life. It was my birthday week, so I\u2019ve never been sent so many bottles of champagne or bouquets of flowers in my life, and probably never will be again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And that was on top of your book debuting at No 1 in the <em>NYT<\/em> bestseller list. What were you doing when you heard the news?<\/strong><br \/>\nIt was maybe 5 o\u2019clock in the evening and I was just sitting on my couch, and my editor called out of nowhere. We were optimistic, but I never imagined that.
