David and Jessica Figari are navigating racial and political divides in their country \u2014 and in their family \u2014 that they never anticipated when they fell in love<\/em><\/p>\n

On the already muggy morning of Aug. 28, 2013, David Figari and Jessica Jones held hands in the billowing crowd near the steps of the Georgetown University Law Center. The young lovers had traveled from Florida<\/a> to meet each other\u2019s relatives and attend the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The reminiscences from 1963 march veterans had ended and the trek to the Lincoln Memorial<\/a> was about to begin when David saw an organizer standing near a microphone at the top of the stairs. He walked up to the man with the mic and introduced himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, I\u2019d like to say something. Can I do it?\u201d David said.<\/p>\n

The man gave him the once-over and immediately said \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no, you don\u2019t understand. I\u2019d like to propose to my girlfriend.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d the man said again.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018No, you don\u2019t understand,\u2019\u201d David said. \u201c\u2018That\u2019s my girlfriend.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He pointed to Jessica. Something clicked \u2014 this couple, this moment \u2014 and the man gasped.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone, everyone, really quick!\u201d he announced. \u201cDavid actually has something to say.\u201d…<\/p>\n
