Transracial identification undermines collective reckoning with that injustice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall me Caitlyn.\u201d With this phrase, emblazoned on <em>Vanity Fair\u2019s<\/em> June 2015 cover, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caitlyn_Jenner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caitlyn Jenner<\/a> revealed her transgender identity to the world. But these words were not only a revelation; they also were a demand. Most obviously, they demanded that others call Jenner by a new name. But even more importantly, they demanded that others recognize Jenner as having a certain identity: <em>woman<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Reactions to this demand were predictable. Jenner was warmly embraced and lauded by many for her decision to\u2014as Jenner put it\u2014live as her \u201cauthentic self.\u201d Transgender activist and writer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laverne_Cox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Laverne Cox<\/a> wrote that Jenner\u2019s \u201ccourage to move past denial into her truth so publicly . . . [is] beyond beautiful to me.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">President Barack Obama<\/a>, retweeting Jenner\u2019s announcement, praised her \u201ccourage to share [her] story.\u201d Hundreds of thousands of others left encouraging comments on Jenner\u2019s social media.
