This perception is rooted in a post-colonial process where Argentine leaders and intellectuals in the 19th century, especially during the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1837_generation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Generation of 1837<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Generation_of_%2780\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Generation of 1880<\/a>, actively made an effort to systematically erase <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afro-Argentines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Black Argentines<\/a> from the country\u2019s history, popular culture, and society in an effort to position the nation as a global power modeled after the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">US<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By the second half of the 1700\u2019s, roughly a third of the population of Buenos Aires was comprised of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afro-Argentines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Afro-Argentines<\/a>. While some were free, most were enslaved, brought in slave ships during the late 16th century in the hundreds of thousands to work as domestic servants and on plantations in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/R%C3%ADo_de_la_Plata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rio de la Plata<\/a> region. During the 18th and 19th centuries, people of African descent spread across Argentina. In some provinces, including <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salta_Province\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Salta<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C%C3%B3rdoba_Province,_Argentina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C\u00f3rdoba<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Santiago_del_Estero_Province\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Santiago del Estero<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catamarca_Province\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catamarca<\/a>, Black Argentines accounted for roughly half the population. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jos%C3%A9_de_San_Mart%C3%ADn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">General San Mart\u00edn<\/a>\u2019s army was heavily comprised of Afro-Argentines.
