And nobody stopped her.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIam a coward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jessica_Krug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jessica Krug\u2019s<\/a> confession started ricocheting across screens one brutally muggy afternoon in late-summer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington%2C_D.C.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington<\/a>. \u201cFor the better part of my adult life,\u201d it began, \u201cevery move I\u2019ve made, every relationship I\u2019ve formed, has been rooted in the napalm toxic soil of lies.\u201d Krug, a faculty member at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Washington_University\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Washington University<\/a>, had taken to <em>Medium<\/em>, the online forum, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=60102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to reveal a stunning fabrication<\/a>. Throughout her entire career in academia, the professor of African history\u2014a white woman\u2014had been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posing as Black and Latina<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have thought about ending these lies many times over many years, but my cowardice was always more powerful than my ethics. I know right from wrong. I know history. I know power. I am a coward,\u201d she wrote. \u201cYou should absolutely cancel me, and I absolutely cancel myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement, posted September 3, 2020, went viral immediately, unleashing a tidal wave of Oh, my Gods across the text chains of Krug\u2019s GW colleagues and other academics. \u201cWe were all blindsided,\u201d says GW history-department chair <a href=\"https:\/\/history.columbian.gwu.edu\/daniel-schwartz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Schwartz<\/a>. Distraught emails from Krug\u2019s students\u2014less than a week into a virtual semester already upended by the coronavirus pandemic\u2014began piling up in faculty in-boxes. Meanwhile, an online mob went to work churning up old photos of Krug and tanking the Amazon ratings of her book.
