Miller<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/majority-minority-america-dont-bet-on-it-11612549609\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.wsj.net\/public\/resources\/images\/ED-BA472_Winter_SOC_20210131145713.jpg\" width=\"550\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Illustration: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kenfallinart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Fallin<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p><em>How a Census Bureau error led Democrats to assume they were on the right side of inexorable demographic trends.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Remember the \u201ccoalition of the ascendant\u201d? <em>National Journal\u2019s<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ron_Brownstein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ronald Brownstein<\/a> invented the phrase in 2008 to describe the \u201cgrowing elements of American society\u201d that had elected <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barack Obama<\/a> and given Democrats commanding majorities in both congressional houses: \u201cyoung people, Hispanics and other minorities, and white upper-middle-class professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republican successes in 2010, 2014 and 2016 called the coalition\u2019s durability into question. But the 2020 election\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joe_Biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Biden\u2019s<\/a> victory notwithstanding\u2014may provide the greatest reason to doubt it. Compared with 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donald_Trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">President Trump<\/a> and congressional Republicans improved their standing significantly among Hispanic voters and made smaller strides among other groups, such as Asian-Americans, blacks and Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe majority minority narrative is wrong,\u201d says sociologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gc.cuny.edu\/Page-Elements\/Academics-Research-Centers-Initiatives\/Doctoral-Programs\/Sociology\/Faculty-Bios\/Richard-Alba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richard Alba<\/a>, referring to the idea that nonwhite Americans will outnumber whites by 2050 or so. In his recent book, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=60020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Great Demographic Illusion<\/a>,\u201d Mr. Alba, 78, shows that many \u201cnonwhites\u201d are assimilating into an American mainstream, much as white ethnic groups did before them.
