She is among the some 8,500 people whose ancestors were enslaved by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cherokee_Nation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cherokee Nation<\/a> in the 1800s.<\/small><\/small><small><\/small><small><em>David Crenshaw\/Associated Press<\/em><\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NPR embedded audio player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/player\/embed\/971084455\/971425973\" width=\"100%\" height=\"290\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cherokeecourts.org\/Supreme-Court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cherokee Nation&#8217;s Supreme Court<\/a> ruled this week to remove the words &#8220;by blood&#8221; from its constitution and other legal doctrines.<\/p>\n<p>The words, added to the constitution in 2007, have been used to exclude Black people whose ancestors were enslaved by the tribe from obtaining full <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cherokee_Nation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cherokee Nation<\/a> citizenship rights.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently <a href=\"https:\/\/anadisgoi.com\/index.php\/government-stories\/512-cherokee-nation-supreme-court-issues-decision-that-by-blood-reference-be-stricken-from-cherokee-nation-constitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some 8,500 enrolled Cherokee Nation members descended from these Freedmen<\/a>, thousands of whom were removed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trail_of_Tears\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trail of Tears<\/a> along with tribal citizens.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Freedmen, until this Cherokee Nation Supreme Court ruling, they couldn&#8217;t hold office, they couldn&#8217;t run for tribal council and they couldn&#8217;t run for chief,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/grahambrewer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graham Lee Brewer<\/a>, an editor for Indigenous affairs at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>High Country News<\/em> <\/a>and KOSU in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oklahoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oklahoma<\/a>. &#8220;And I would argue that that made them second-class citizens.&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/02\/25\/971084455\/cherokee-nation-strikes-down-language-that-limits-citizenship-rights-by-blood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.
