She was born <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fredi_Washington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fredericka Carolyn Washington<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Savannah,_Georgia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Savannah, Georgia<\/a> on December 23, 1903, and was one of nine children of Robert T. and Harriet Walker Ward Washington. Fredi&#8217;s mother died when she was young, and she attended St. Elizabeth&#8217;s Convent in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cornwells_Heights,_Pennsylvania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cornwell Heights, Pennsylvania<\/a> with her sister Isabel. Fredi moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harlem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harlem<\/a> in 1919 to live with her grandmother. She left school and soon entered show business. She began her career in the early 1920s as a chorus dancer in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Noble_Sissle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nobble Sissle<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eubie_Blake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eubie Blake&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shuffle_Along\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Shuffle Along<\/em><\/a>.
