It was produced in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SherriWrites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Sherri Williams&#8217;<\/a> Race, Ethnic and Community Reporting class at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.american.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American University<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Al\u00e9 Headley, 24, an Afro Panamanian living in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minneapolis_Minnesota\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minneapolis, Minnesota<\/a>, attended over 20 marches and rallies last summer to protest the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Floyd_protests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">death of George Floyd<\/a>. Headley, who is Black, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Hispanic_and_Latino_Americans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afro-Latina<\/a>, and queer, identifies as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Non-binary_gender\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nonbinary<\/a> and uses the pronouns they\/them and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/ella\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ella<\/a>. They say they were \u201cimmediately\u201d driven to join movements demanding justice for Black and brown lives lost to police violence.<\/p>\n<p>Their decision to get involved was multifaceted and deeply personal: They had witnessed police officers mistreat unhoused people in their neighborhood, thought of their younger brother who regularly endures police harassment, and their own experiences with racial profiling. \u201cIt\u2019s disgusting to see how other people are treated, and then experiencing it for yourself,\u201d Headley tells <em>Teen Vogue<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s a different level of empathy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While navigating dual identities, many members of Afro-Latinx communities got involved in last summer\u2019s uprisings against systemic racism. Many often found themselves in an uncomfortable tug of war with their identities.
