Julissa Contreras<\/a> is a Dominican writer, poet, actor and creator of the \u201cLadies Who Bronch\u00e9<\/a>\u201d podcast. Dash Harris<\/a> Machado is co-founder of AfroLatino Travel, producer and facilitator of the \u201cRadio Ca\u00f1a Negra<\/a>\u201d podcast and producer of \u201cNEGRO: A Docu-series About Latinx Identity<\/a>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The recent controversy surrounding \u201cIn the Heights<\/a>,\u201d the big-budget film based on the musical created by Lin-Manuel Miranda<\/a>, came as no surprise for Black Latin American and Caribbean people. With its White and light-skinned leading roles, the film became part of a long tradition in the Americas<\/a> of Black erasure.<\/p>\n

When moviegoers and journalists, including the Root\u2019s<\/em> Felice Le\u00f3n<\/a>, started highlighting the lack of Black leading cast members in the film, many prominent figures rushed to defend it. \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t burden Lin-Manuel with the responsibility of representing every Latino,\u201d commentator Ana Navarro said<\/a>. \u201cYou can never do right, it seems,\u201d actress Rita Moreno said<\/a> in defense of Miranda. \u201cThis is the man who literally has brought Latino-ness and Puerto Rican-ness to America<\/a>.\u201d Both accounts are inaccurate.<\/p>\n
