This is the last standing slave building on the property, likely used as a kitchen. <em>Courtesy photo<\/em><\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/history.indiana.edu\/faculty_staff\/faculty\/myers_amrita.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Amrita Chakrabarti Myers<\/a> regards her work as an academic focused on slavery and Black women\u2019s history as a \u201clabor of recovery.\u201d Her subjects, many illiterate, left little behind.<\/p>\n<p>Myers\u2019 second book, <em>The Vice President\u2019s Black Wife: The Untold Life of Julia Chinn<\/em>, due out in 2022, focuses on the life of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julia_Chinn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Julia Chinn<\/a>, an enslaved woman in the early 1800s, on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kentucky\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kentucky<\/a> estate of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Mentor_Johnson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Mentor Johnson<\/a>. Chinn had two children by Johnson, to whom she was married for 23 years. Because Chinn was Black, the marriage was not legal, but Johnson publicly treated her as his spouse.
