About the issues of diversity, equity and inclusion that organizations of all kinds were addressing, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/08\/06\/arts\/dance\/theresa-ruth-howard.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aesthetic assumptions, implicit biases and longstanding practices<\/a> particular to ballet and its history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were innumerable panel discussions,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/24\/arts\/dance\/robert-garland-dance-theater-of-harlem.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Garland, the resident choreographer of Dance Theater of Harlem<\/a>. \u201cBut I felt that for the younger Black dancers, it was a heavy burden to be responsible for all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garland wanted to help them, and in the way that he knows best: by making a dance for them. That work, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/littleisland.org\/events\/nyc-free:-stare-decisis-(to-stand-by-things-decided)\/27004ASHCSPBGDLSQKGVVRBMJJQVTHRLM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stare Decisis (To Stand by Things Decided)<\/a>,\u201d has its debut on Wednesday as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/27\/theater\/little-island-arts-festival-nyc-free.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cNYC Free,\u201d a monthlong festival at Little Island<\/a>, the new public park on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hudson_River\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hudson River<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The most significant feature of \u201cStare Decisis\u201d is its eight-member cast: an extraordinarily rare gathering of Black dancers from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City_Ballet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York City Ballet<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Ballet_Theatre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Ballet Theater<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dance_Theatre_of_Harlem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dance Theater of Harlem<\/a>. Misty Copeland \u2014 Ballet Theater\u2019s first Black female principal dancer and one of the most famous ballerinas in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a> \u2014 is among them.
