This is the question <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DrDW11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ingrid Dineen-Wimberly\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=57035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Allure of Blackness among Mixed-Race Americans, 1862\u20131916<\/em><\/a> sets out to answer. Dineen-Wimberly\u2019s argument is encapsulated in her title, reflecting her contention that although many post\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Civil War<\/a> Black leaders could have chosen to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pass as white<\/a> they instead identified deliberately as Black. This choice, Dineen-Wimberly argues, rested on their ability as Black people to achieve political power or economic success. This ability to succeed because they were Black thus constituted the \u201callure\u201d of Blackness.
