Jones, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, will write four books for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basicbooks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Basic Books<\/a>, starting with an exploration of the history and legacy of slavery\u2019s sexual violence.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The historian <a href=\"https:\/\/marthasjones.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martha S. Jones<\/a> has a nose for writing deeply researched histories that land in the middle of the rough and tumble of our national politics \u2014 sometimes deliberately, sometimes not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/us\/academic\/subjects\/history\/early-republic-and-antebellum-history\/birthright-citizens-history-race-and-rights-antebellum-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Birthright Citizens<\/a>,\u201d her 2018 scholarly study of the history of 19th-century debates about Black citizenship in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/07\/19\/arts\/the-history-behind-the-birthright-citizenship-battle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrived at a moment<\/a> when some conservatives had floated the idea of ending the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fourteenth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">14th Amendment\u2019s<\/a> guarantee that all people born in America are automatically citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.basicbooks.com\/titles\/martha-s-jones\/vanguard\/9781541618602\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vanguard<\/a>,\u201d a political history of Black women that challenged popular narratives of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Women%27s_suffrage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suffrage movement<\/a>, was timed to coincide with the centennial of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nineteenth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">19th Amendment<\/a> last August \u2014 but also happened to coincide with the election of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kamala_Harris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kamala Harris<\/a> as America\u2019s first female vice president.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Jones, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, has signed an unusual four-book deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basicbooks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Basic Books<\/a> for a series of works that will address the tangled history of race, slavery and identity.
