Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Edu Grau<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gibbesmuseum.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gibbes Museum of Art<\/a> has announced the second installment of its film series, titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gibbesmuseum.org\/programs-events\/gibbes-film-in-focus-passing-strange-\/622\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gibbes Films in Focus: Passing Strange<\/a>,\u201d which will feature the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Carolina_Lowcountry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lowcountry\u2019s<\/a> first screening of the 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sundance_Film_Festival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sundance Film Festival<\/a> selection, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Passing_(film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Passing<\/a>,\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rebecca_Hall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rebecca Hall<\/a>, starring <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tessa_Thompson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tessa Thompson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ruth_Negga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruth Negga<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andr%C3%A9_Holland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andre Holland<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Skarsg%C3%A5rd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/a> and adapted from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=2508\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">groundbreaking novel<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nella_Larsen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nella Larsen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this series, the Gibbes will explore the tradition of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">race-passing<\/a> narratives as represented on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Silver_Screen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">silver screen<\/a>. From <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kate_Chopin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kate Chopin\u2019s<\/a> 1893 short story \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/D%C3%A9sir%C3%A9e%27s_Baby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">D\u00e9sir\u00e9e\u2019s Baby<\/a>,\u201d to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gibbesmuseum.org\/programs-events\/gibbes-film-in-focus-passing-strange-\/622\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1936<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Show_Boat_(1951_film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1951 adaptations<\/a> of the musical \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Show_Boat\">Showboat<\/a>,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America<\/a> has been enthralled by passing narratives, whereby a person of Black descent, but of ambiguous or white features, slips into white society, destabilizing the strict racial codes that have governed so much of American life.
