That&#8217;s A Big Data Problem<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Public Radio<\/a><br \/>\n2021-09-30<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hansilowang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hansi Lo Wang<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/09\/30\/1037352177\/2020-census-results-by-race-some-other-latino-ethnicity-hispanic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.npr.org\/assets\/img\/2021\/09\/28\/gettyimages-1212850264-3a49e3799da51192512a00ed0161f7065964bfe1-s1800-c85.webp\" width=\"550\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Growing numbers of Latinos identifying as &#8220;Some other race&#8221; for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_census\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. census<\/a> have boosted the category to become the country&#8217;s second-largest racial group after &#8220;White.&#8221; Researchers are concerned the catchall grouping obscures many Latinx people&#8217;s identities and does not produce the data needed to address racial inequities.<br \/>\n<em>Ada daSilva\/Getty Images<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p>For Leani Garc\u00eda Torres, none of the boxes really fit.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, she answered <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_census\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. census<\/a> questions for the first time on her own as an adult. Is she of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin? That was easy. She marked, &#8220;Yes, Puerto Rican.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But then came the stumper: What is her race?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whenever that question is posed, it does raise a little bit of anxiety,&#8221; Garc\u00eda Torres explains. &#8220;I actually remember calling my dad and saying, &#8216;What race are you putting? I don&#8217;t know what to put.&#8217; &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The categories the once-a-decade head count uses \u2014 &#8220;White,&#8221; &#8220;Black&#8221; and &#8220;American Indian or Alaska Native,&#8221; plus those for Asian and Pacific Islander groups \u2014 have never resonated with her.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s tricky,&#8221; the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklyn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brooklyn, N.Y.<\/a>, resident by way of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tennessee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tennessee<\/a> says. &#8220;Both of my parents are from the island of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Puerto_Rico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Puerto Rico<\/a>, and we&#8217;re just historically pretty mixed. If you look at anyone in my family, you wouldn&#8217;t really be able to guess a race.
