Jocelyn Nicole Johnson<\/a>, at 50, is not the average age of a debut author. But the public school teacher describes herself as a \u201cliterary debutante\u201d with the October publication of \u201cMy Monticello<\/a>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Jocelyn Nicole Johnson<\/a> has been a public school art teacher for 20 years, but she is not in her elementary classroom this fall in Charlottesville, Va.<\/a> Her debut collection, \u201cMy Monticello<\/a>\u201d \u2014 five short stories and the book\u2019s title novella<\/a> \u2014 will be published on Oct. 5. The Pulitzer Prize<\/a>-winning author Colson Whitehead<\/a> has called \u201cMy Monticello\u201d \u201cnimble, knowing, and electrifying,\u201d and Esquire<\/em> named \u201cMy Monticello,\u201d published by Henry Holt<\/a>, one of the best books of the fall, writing that it \u201cannounces the arrival of an electric new literary voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

To top that off, Netflix plans to turn the book\u2019s title novella into a film. In the novella, which is set in the near future, a young woman who is descended from Thomas Jefferson<\/a> and Sally Hemings<\/a>, and a band of largely Black and brown survivors take refuge from marauding white supremacists in Monticello<\/a>, Jefferson\u2019s homestead…<\/p>\n
