Joined on stage by stars <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ruth_Negga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruth Negga<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andr%C3%A9_Holland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andr\u00e9 Holland<\/a>, she explained why she adapted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=2508\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nella Larsen\u2019s 1929 novel<\/a>. \u201cMy mother\u2019s from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Detroit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Detroit<\/a> and her father was African American and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed for white<\/a> his whole life. When I read the book, it clicked into place: obviously that\u2019s what my grandfather did \u2014 for his family, his children\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Based on Nella Larsen\u2019s 1929 novel, writer-director Hall\u2019s <em>Passing<\/em> explores the lives of two mixed-race childhood friends, Irene (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tessa_Thompson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tessa Thompson<\/a>) and Clare (Ruth Negga), who reunite as adults. They become involved in each other\u2019s lives and explore how they diverged due to Irene identifying as Black while Clare \u201cpasses\u201d as white. Holland, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Skarsg%C3%A5rd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Camp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill Camp<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gbenga_Akinnagbe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gbenga Akinnagbe<\/a> also star in the film, which premiered at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sundance_Film_Festival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sundance<\/a>.
