The children, who came to be known by the British press as the nation\u2019s \u201cBrown Babies<\/a>\u201d, grew up in post-war Britain<\/em><\/p>\n

During World War II<\/a>, around one million American troops arrived in England<\/a> to prepare for the invasion of Europe<\/a> and to assist Great Britain<\/a> in the fight against Nazi Germany<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Of these GIs, 130,000 were African American who landed in cities such as Bristol<\/a> between 1942 and 1945.<\/p>\n

For many Brits, this was their first time meeting a person of colour, but in Bristol, the public were incredibly welcoming to their American visitors, with some pubs such as The Colston Arms<\/a> refusing to adhere to US<\/a> segregation practices.<\/p>\n

America\u2019s stringent Jim Crow laws<\/a> were not limited to the United States<\/a> alone, as the army was officially segregated until 1948…<\/p>\n
