As she tells IndieWire, she knew there was only one way to make it happen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Every word that first-time feature filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rebecca_Hall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rebecca Hall<\/a> uses to describe the genesis of her \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Passing_(film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Passing<\/a>\u201d vibrates with intensity. Her first experience reading the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=2508\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nella Larsen novella<\/a> she eventually adapted for the black-and-white period piece was like \u201cbeing in a fever,\u201d the pages flipping by as if she was \u201cslightly possessed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 13 years after first reading Larsen\u2019s book, Hall has kept up that same passion for the material, enough to propel her through years of denials from Hollywood brass and the distinct possibility that the film would never get made the way she saw it.<\/p>\n<p>Much has been made of Hall\u2019s personal connection to the material \u2014 the film, like Larsen\u2019s seminal work, follows the fraught reunion of a pair of friends (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tessa_Thompson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tessa Thompson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ruth_Negga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruth Negga<\/a>), both of whom are Black, though one of them has crossed the color line and lived her life <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cpassing\u201d as a white woman<\/a> (Negga as Clare). Hall herself is of mixed racial heritage and her own maternal grandfather \u201cpassed\u201d for the majority of his life.
