Readers of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/600MilDollarMan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steve Majors\u2019<\/a> powerful family memoir, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=61180\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>High Yella<\/em><\/a>, learn early on that the author used this memorable line in a key moment of courtship; An awkward attempt to use humor to explain a childhood marked by racism, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Discrimination_based_on_skin_color\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shadeism<\/a>, poverty, abuse, alcoholism, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homophobia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">homophobia<\/a> and the black magic that Black women in his family called \u201choodoo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that I was born a poor Black child was just a part of my past,\u201d Majors writes. \u201cThe full story of how that poor Black child grew up and escaped his past is wilder and crazier than any screenplay Steve Martin could ever dream up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The central part of <em>High Yella<\/em> involves race, identity and family. Majors, 55, is a light-skinned, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cisgender\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cisgender<\/a> Black gay man from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Upstate_New_York\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">upstate New York<\/a> who was the youngest of five children, raised Roman Catholic, and married to a cis, white, gay Jewish man. He writes how he \u201cchecked boxes\u201d when he needed to, and is perpetually plagued by people who presume to question his identity because he is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">white-passing<\/a>.
