A study by CSUN<\/a> researchers found that conservatives labeled now-Vice President Kamala Harris<\/a> (above, with her husband Douglas Emhoff<\/a>) as \u201cwhite\u201d much more often than liberals, who tended to categorize her as multiracial. Labeling Harris as \u201cwhite\u201d may be influenced by a desired to diminish the power of her biracial ancestry to attract voters, the researchers said.<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

As the fight for the White House<\/a> heated up last year and Kamala Harris<\/a> became the first woman of color on a major party ticket, California State University, Northridge<\/a> researchers wondered if political ideology would influence how people perceived her biracial ancestry.<\/p>\n

What they found<\/a> surprised them. Conservatives labeled now-Vice President Harris \u2014 whose mother is South Asian and was born in India<\/a> and father is Black and was born in Jamaica<\/a> \u2014 as \u201cwhite\u201d much more often than liberals, who tended to categorize her as multiracial.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were some theories out there suggesting that conservatives were less willing to acknowledge that she is Black \u2014 she identifies herself as a Black woman and frequently references her Indian heritage \u2014 than liberals, who would be more willing to recognize her multiracial ancestry,\u201d said CSUN psychology professor Debbie Ma<\/a>…<\/p>\n
