She was tall, smart, and intimidating, a shrewd businesswoman unafraid to speak her mind. For years I\u2019d recognized <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Effa_Manley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Effa Manley<\/a> for many things: her civil rights work, co-owning and managing a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Negro_league_baseball\">Negro League baseball<\/a> team, her stint as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Negro_National_League_(1933%E2%80%931948)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Negro National League<\/a> treasurer, her role in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Larry_Doby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Larry Doby<\/a> integrating <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_League_Baseball\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Major League Baseball\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_League\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American League<\/a>, and being the first African-American woman inducted into the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Baseball_Hall_of_Fame_and_Museum\">National Baseball Hall of Fame<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But for everything Manley was, there is one thing she really wasn\u2019t: Black.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything in my life has been Black,\u201d Manley told sportswriter <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/author\/henry-hecht\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henry Hecht<\/a> of the <em>New York Post<\/em> in 1975. For many years, that\u2019s seemed like the last word on the matter. While I knew Manley was not the first woman to own a team \u2014 a distinction actually held by <a href=\"https:\/\/nuvo.newsnirvana.com\/entertainment\/sports\/the-first-female-negro-leagues-owner---here-in-indy\/article_26dcb0fb-82de-5f37-95ae-3735c1d5b4f3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olivia Taylor<\/a>, who became the owner of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indianapolis_ABCs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indianapolis ABC Clowns<\/a> after her husband <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C._I._Taylor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C.I. Taylor<\/a> died 1922 \u2014 I had always assumed she was African American. Her race, however, has been a source of quiet controversy for years, one of which I was unaware.
