The only woman in the National Baseball Hall of Fame<\/a> had a fascinating \u2014 and confusing \u2014 past<\/em><\/p>\n

She was sure and confident in everything she did. She was tall, smart, and intimidating, a shrewd businesswoman unafraid to speak her mind. For years I\u2019d recognized Effa Manley<\/a> for many things: her civil rights work, co-owning and managing a Negro League baseball<\/a> team, her stint as Negro National League<\/a> treasurer, her role in Larry Doby<\/a> integrating Major League Baseball\u2019s<\/a> American League<\/a>, and being the first African-American woman inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But for everything Manley was, there is one thing she really wasn\u2019t: Black.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything in my life has been Black,\u201d Manley told sportswriter Henry Hecht<\/a> of the New York Post<\/em> in 1975. For many years, that\u2019s seemed like the last word on the matter. While I knew Manley was not the first woman to own a team \u2014 a distinction actually held by Olivia Taylor<\/a>, who became the owner of the Indianapolis ABC Clowns<\/a> after her husband C.I. Taylor<\/a> died 1922 \u2014 I had always assumed she was African American. Her race, however, has been a source of quiet controversy for years, one of which I was unaware. It wasn\u2019t until I started researching more into her life I found out perhaps Manley wasn\u2019t exactly who she seemed…<\/p>\n
