(Harris &amp; Ewing Collection\/Library of Congress)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Four years ago, torch-bearing \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unite_the_Right_rally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unite the Right<\/a>\u201d demonstrators, including <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ku_Klux_Klan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ku Klux Klan<\/a> members and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neo-Nazism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">neo-Nazis<\/a>, marched into <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charlottesville,_Virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charlottesville<\/a>, shouting, \u201cJews will not replace us\u201d and \u201cWhite lives matter.\u201d The next day, they clashed with counter-protesters, leaving one woman dead and a nation stunned.<\/p>\n<p>Two-dozen participants in the rally are now on trial in a civil case, accused of conspiracy to commit racially motivated violence.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the Charlottesville demonstrators were motivated by an ideology known as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Replacement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">great replacement theory<\/a>,\u201d which warns that an increase in the non-White population fueled by immigration will destroy White and Western civilization.<\/p>\n<p>That ideology has inspired a lot of recent violence, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christchurch_mosque_shootings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 Christchurch mosque shootings<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Zealand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Zealand<\/a>, where the shooter warned of \u201cWhite genocide\u201d before pleading guilty to 51 murders, 40 attempted murders and engaging in a terrorist act.<\/p>\n<p>But the great replacement theory isn\u2019t new. More than 70 years ago, a U.S. senator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=38847\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published a book<\/a> warning of the same destruction of White civilization. And as with the Charlottesville defendants, his incitements to racial violence that gave him a spotlight also got him into serious trouble.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theodore_G._Bilbo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Theodore G. Bilbo<\/a> had twice been governor of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mississippi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mississippi<\/a> before he served in the U.S. Senate from 1935 to 1947, when \u201cthe growing intolerance among many whites toward public racism and anti-Semitism\u201d led to his fall, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississippihistory.org\/sites\/default\/files\/spring_summer_2019_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an account<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississippihistory.org\/journal-mississippi-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Journal of Mississippi History<\/em><\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/history\/2021\/11\/15\/theodore-bilbo-great-replacement-theory\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Long before Charlottesville, \u2018great replacement theory\u2019 found its champion in a racist senator The Washington Post 2021-11-15 Martha Hamilton A 1939 photo of Sen.
