Please judge my music on its own merit,\u201d wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florence_Price\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florence Price<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston_Symphony_Orchestra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boston Symphony<\/a> conductor <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serge_Koussevitzky\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Serge Koussevitzky<\/a> in 1943.<\/p>\n<p>Price was born a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Little_Rock,_Arkansas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Little Rock<\/a> native in 1887 into a mixed-race family at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/2100+Broadway+St,+Little+Rock,+AR+72206\/@34.7284629,-92.2811997,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x87d2bb148cde09af:0x7c741137209a06fe!8m2!3d34.7284629!4d-92.2790057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2100 Broadway<\/a>. Her father was the only Black dentist in town, and her mother was a music teacher. She began playing the piano and composing music at 3 years old, and at 11, published her first work. She graduated valedictorian of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lrsd.org\/Page\/2931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Capitol Hill High School<\/a> at the age of 14 and went on to study at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_England_Conservatory_of_Music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England Conservatory of Music<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boston<\/a> at 16.<\/p>\n<p>One of only three Black students at the conservatory, Price was counseled by her mother to list her hometown as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Puebla_(city)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pueblo, Mexico<\/a>, to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conceal her race<\/a>. She graduated with honors in three years with a double-major in organ performance and piano teaching.<\/p>\n<p>After school, she came home to teach at <a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopediaofarkansas.net\/entries\/cotton-plant-academy-6548\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cotton Plant Academy<\/a> and then <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shorter_College_(Arkansas)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shorter College<\/a> before moving to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlanta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atlanta<\/a> to become head of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clark_Atlanta_University\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clark College<\/a> Music Department. In 1912, she returned to Little Rock to marry attorney Thomas Price and raise a family.<\/p>\n<p>Racial tensions caused them to move to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago<\/a> in 1927, and it wasn\u2019t long before she and her husband divorced.
