Rebecca Hall<\/a> said Saturday that her mother [Maria Ewing<\/a>] told her Hall\u2019s directorial debut, Passing<\/em><\/a>, liberated her family, as Hall\u2019s grandfather was a Black man who decided to pass for White<\/a> in Detroit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe called me up in tears when she first saw it and she just said, \u2018You\u2019ve liberated us,\u2019\u201d Hall said. \u201cI grew up observing my mother and thinking about the psychological impact of being brought up in an environment where you weren\u2019t allowed to talk about something. To me, she always looked like a Black woman. I was saying to her, \u2018Tell me about this. What are we? Tell me the story.\u2019 She didn\u2019t know. It\u2019s not that she wouldn\u2019t. She couldn\u2019t. She was respecting her father\u2019s wishes.\u201d…<\/p>\n
