In Brit Bennett\u2019s<\/a> novel \u201cThe Vanishing Half<\/a>,\u201d light-skinned African American twin sisters are separated when one of them decides to pass as white<\/a>, leaving her family behind.<\/p>\n

The novel, which delves deeply into the concept of identity, was a New York Times<\/em> best-seller and designated as one of the newspaper\u2019s best books of 2020.<\/p>\n

Bennett, 31, who grew up in southern California<\/a>, attended Stanford University and the University of Michigan and now lives in New York<\/a>. She published her debut novel, \u201cThe Mothers,\u201d in 2016. She has written numerous essays, including \u201cI Don\u2019t Know What to Do With Good White People\u201d and \u201cAddy Walker, An American Girl,\u201d about the Pleasant Company\u2019s<\/a> first Black doll.<\/p>\n
