REYNOSA, Mexico<\/a> \u2014 So much of her is hyphenated, not just her name: Felicia Rangel-Samponaro<\/a>. With caramel skin and curly brown hair that\u2019s often tied back, she can pass as Latina.<\/p>\n

But she identifies as Black.<\/p>\n

On the Texas-Mexico border<\/a>, she\u2019s emerged as a vigorous defender of immigrants, and that work often forces her to reckon with how race and ethnicity \u2014 real and perceived \u2014 shape lives on the border, including her own.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of oppression, discrimination and racism that goes on, on both sides of the border,\u201d she said…<\/p>\n
