According to the <em>Times Union<\/em>, her mother was an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ojibwe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ojibwa<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ojibwe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chippewa<\/a> woman from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Albany,_New_York\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Albany<\/a> known for embroidering moccasins and her father was a freed slave who worked as a gentleman\u2019s servant in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rensselaer_County,_New_York\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rensselaer County<\/a>; when her mother died, Lewis was known as Wildfire while living with her maternal relatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe identified first as a Native American. Later she identified more as an African American. She was in two worlds.
