In Netflix\u2019s<\/a> holiday rom-com<\/a> \u201cLove Hard<\/a>,\u201d comedian Jimmy O. Yang<\/a> plays Josh Lin, a Chinese American everyman who uses the photo of his much-hotter, mixed-race Asian friend Tag (Darren Barnet<\/a>) to get dating app matches. The ploy works. He links with and falls for Natalie (Nina Dobrev<\/a>), a White woman so smitten she flies cross-country to surprise him.<\/p>\n

But \u2014 shocker \u2014 Josh isn\u2019t the beefcake in the photos, but a regular guy. Natalie is incensed, though not about his race. Guilty about his catfishing<\/a>, Josh helps Natalie woo handsome Tag instead.<\/p>\n

Natalie also meets real Josh\u2019s Chinese family, where his father is married to a White woman and his brother dates one. These arrangements surprised me \u2014 Asian male\/White female relationships, called AMWF<\/a> online, are rarely shown on-screen. That has finally begun to change, but I\u2019m still waiting for the couples to talk about it…<\/p>\n
