Ewing, also the mother of actor-director Rebecca Hall<\/a>, died Sunday at her home in Detroit<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

Maria Ewing<\/a>, a soprano and mezzo-soprano<\/a> noted for intense performances who became the wife of director Sir Peter Hall<\/a> and the mother of actor-director Rebecca Hall<\/a>, has died at age 71.<\/p>\n

Ewing died Sunday at her home in Detroit<\/a>, spokeswoman Bryna Rifkin<\/a> said Monday.<\/p>\n

Born in Detroit to a Dutch mother and an African American father<\/a>, Ewing was the youngest of four daughters.<\/p>\n
