Lani Guinier<\/a>, the daughter of a white Jewish mother and Black Panamanian father whose nomination by President Clinton<\/a> to head the Civil Rights Division<\/a> of the Department of Justice<\/a> was opposed by mainstream Jewish organizations, died on Friday.<\/p>\n

Guinier, who went on to become the first Black woman on the Harvard Law School faculty as well as its first woman of color given a tenured post, succumbed to complications from Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/a>, according to The Boston Globe<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Carrie Johnson<\/a>, who covers the Justice Department for National Public Radio<\/a>, tweeted a message from Harvard Law School Dean John Manning<\/a> confirming Guinier\u2019s death and praising her.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer scholarship changed our understanding of democracy \u2013 of why and how the voices of the historically underrepresented must be heard and what it takes to have a meaningful right to vote,\u201d Manning\u2019s message said.
