But there\u2019s a lot left out of the conversation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When pop star <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olivia_Rodrigo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olivia Rodrigo<\/a> released her album <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sour_(album)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Sour<\/em><\/a> in May 2021, listeners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@marmaryeesa2021\/video\/6965433280468503814?_d=secCgYIASAHKAESPgo8hsY3Z0GhWT%2F2FFALIjZGrNYPsabpQrHRYBuWebJ8MOHGIv4xzUzX0TvUEzuzSNLksvb8OQDNFm6JsrmGGgA%3D&amp;checksum=2bd3c2f704f9aa79d66880ffb51ca8a50559ddfb1b4b240ced36fd086749ad1a&amp;language=en&amp;preview_pb=0&amp;sec_user_id=MS4wLjABAAAA0YmIbsom_JkDTBOA4_4wXxTqWcswoAoDxVzZDGTm8kA6SaZ4ZppTJe29hYVvdIG3&amp;share_app_id=1233&amp;share_item_id=6965433280468503814&amp;share_link_id=455C3AAA-6BC6-4AF8-AAF7-A954BF517D25&amp;source=h5_m&amp;timestamp=1635970701&amp;tt_from=copy&amp;u_code=d8jjed2305l2cc&amp;user_id=6746706431179146245&amp;utm_campaign=client_share&amp;utm_medium=ios&amp;utm_source=copy&amp;_r=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took to TikTok<\/a> to debate whether she was \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">white passing<\/a>.\u201d The question was not really about how Rodrigo perceives or publicly identifies herself. She is of both <a href=\"https:\/\/caamedia.org\/blog\/2018\/01\/19\/olivia-rodrigo-of-disneys-bizaardvark-chats-about-acting-singing-her-filipino-family-and-skateboarding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Filipino and white ancestry<\/a>. Rather, it was about whether others see her as white. The Rodrigo discourse soon enflamed more general discussion about who deems one \u201cwhite passing.\u201d As one Iranian-born TikToker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@littleyeg\/video\/7010789673706540294?_d=secCgYIASAHKAESPgo8%2Fwaymvd0Gfur7Q8M0SzLvON4Ldzl1%2FzZzw5Sbx9z3XAC9oyzRwCvZ2Nl6CFPDRQsHnf%2FZg56P2Fj6Y8XGgA%3D&amp;checksum=6b35b8251ec0c0ac03cc6cbe1f545b79c440504267175e6a3a76d03ff3e665e5&amp;language=en&amp;preview_pb=0&amp;sec_user_id=MS4wLjABAAAA0YmIbsom_JkDTBOA4_4wXxTqWcswoAoDxVzZDGTm8kA6SaZ4ZppTJe29hYVvdIG3&amp;share_app_id=1233&amp;share_item_id=7010789673706540294&amp;share_link_id=E27BB2EF-56BF-4D41-95B7-855B62B1FFD3&amp;source=h5_m&amp;timestamp=1635971367&amp;tt_from=copy&amp;u_code=d8jjed2305l2cc&amp;user_id=6746706431179146245&amp;utm_campaign=client_share&amp;utm_medium=ios&amp;utm_source=copy&amp;_r=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a>, she \u201cdid not grow up being white\u201d when she came of age in post-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/September_11_attacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">9\/11<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America<\/a>, but after others began to associate her appearance with whiteness\u2014partially because of the rise of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kardashian_family\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kardashians<\/a>\u2014she now recognizes the privilege of being \u201cwhite passing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conversation differed from how \u201cpassing\u201d has traditionally been used in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a>. In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=4781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Crow era<\/a>\u2014when \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/shows\/jefferson\/mixed\/onedrop.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one drop<\/a>\u201d of Black ancestry subjected a person to segregation\u2014\u201cpassing\u201d was a deception to assume the privileges of whiteness. From 1880 to 1940, experts suspect about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=39575\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20 percent<\/a> of Black men passed for white at some point. It was commonly an attempt to \u201caccess things that wouldn\u2019t have been available to them otherwise,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/cas\/sociology\/profiles\/nikki-khanna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nikki Khanna<\/a>, a sociology professor at the University of Vermont.
