Public domain image<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pearl_Hobson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pearl Hobson<\/a> was among a number of African-American performers who left the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a> in the 1900s to somewhat escape racism. At the time, groups like the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fisk_Jubilee_Singers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fisk Jubilee Singers<\/a> were making waves abroad due to the popularity of African-American culture through performance art. Hobson also wanted to profit from the situation. And so she did as she became the most popular African-American dancer and singer in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russian_Empire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Imperial Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cMulatto Sharpshooter,\u201d as she was known, wowed elite audiences from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Petersburg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Petersburg<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moscow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moscow<\/a> by 1909 while living much of this period in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Odessa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Odessa, Ukraine<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_Russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southern Russia<\/a>, as stated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/global-african-history\/hobson-pearl-1879\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one account<\/a>. Not much is known about Hobson\u2019s background.
