You\u2019re one of the reasons the courts for children are a greater hope than some people say. You\u2019re one of the dedicated ones.1<\/sup><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Born and raised in Poughkeepsie<\/a>, but with a career in the five boroughs<\/a> of New York City<\/a>, Jane Matilda Bolin<\/a> (1908\u20132007) is best known for a particular \u201cfirst\u201d of groundbreaking magnitude. She holds the honor of being the first African-American judge in the entire United States<\/a>, joining the bench of New York City\u2019s Domestic Relations Court<\/a> in 1939. Her appointment by Mayor Fiorello La Guardia<\/a>, which came as some surprise to Bolin herself \u2014 summoned with her husband to an audience with the mayor at the 1939 World\u2019s Fair<\/a>, she was not informed of the mayor\u2019s intentions in advance \u2014 made \u201cnews around the world.\u201d2<\/sup><\/p>\n

About that news: in announcing this historical judgeship, some outlets hedged the call, if ever so slightly. The Chicago Defender<\/em><\/a>, which \u201cchronicled and catalyzed the African-American community\u2019s greatest accomplishments for nearly a century,\u201d3<\/sup> proudly announced that La Guardia had \u201csmashed a precedent for the entire United States\u201d because Bolin was \u201cthought to be the first Race woman judge to be appointed in this country.\u201d4<\/sup> About two months later, the Defender<\/em> had eliminated the qualifier, describing Judge Bolin as the \u201cfirst Race woman to serve as a judge in the history of America.\u201d5<\/sup> And despite the shifting nature of historical inquiry, her title has held firm; on the sad occasion of her obituary, she was still, resolutely, \u201cthe first black woman in the United States to become a judge.\u201d6<\/sup>…<\/p>\n
