You\u2019re one of the dedicated ones.<sup>1<\/sup><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Born and raised in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poughkeepsie,_New_York\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poughkeepsie<\/a>, but with a career in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boroughs_of_New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five boroughs<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York City<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jane_Bolin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jane Matilda Bolin<\/a> (1908\u20132007) is best known for a particular \u201cfirst\u201d of groundbreaking magnitude. She holds the honor of being the first African-American judge in the entire <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a>, joining the bench of New York City\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Family_court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Domestic Relations Court<\/a> in 1939. Her appointment by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fiorello_La_Guardia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayor Fiorello La Guardia<\/a>, which came as some surprise to Bolin herself \u2014 summoned with her husband to an audience with the mayor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1939_New_York_World%27s_Fair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1939 World\u2019s Fair<\/a>, she was not informed of the mayor\u2019s intentions in advance \u2014 made \u201cnews around the world.\u201d<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>About that news: in announcing this historical judgeship, some outlets hedged the call, if ever so slightly. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Chicago_Defender\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Chicago Defender<\/em><\/a>, which \u201cchronicled and catalyzed the African-American community\u2019s greatest accomplishments for nearly a century,\u201d<sup>3<\/sup> proudly announced that La Guardia had \u201csmashed a precedent for the entire United States\u201d because Bolin was \u201cthought to be the first Race woman judge to be appointed in this country.\u201d<sup>4<\/sup> About two months later, the <em>Defender<\/em> had eliminated the qualifier, describing Judge Bolin as the \u201cfirst Race woman to serve as a judge in the history of America.\u201d<sup>5<\/sup> And despite the shifting nature of historical inquiry, her title has held firm; on the sad occasion of her obituary, she was still, resolutely, \u201cthe first black woman in the United States to become a judge.\u201d<sup>6<\/sup>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"https:\/\/history.nycourts.gov\/judge-jane-bolin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Judge Jane Bolin Historical Society of the New York Courts 2018-02-21 David L.
