Hawkes<\/strong><\/a>, Assistant Professor of English<br \/><em>University of Texas, El Paso<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Among <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harlem_Renaissance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Negro Renaissance<\/a> greats such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zora_Neale_Hurston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zora Neale Hurston<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Countee_Cullen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Countee Cullen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Langston_Hughes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Langston Hughes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Robeson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul Robeson<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wallace_Thurman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wallace Thurman<\/a>, early twentieth-century African American newspapers referred to the Afro-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montaukett\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Montauk<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olivia_Ward_Bush-Banks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olivia Ward Bush-Banks<\/a> as \u201cthe grand dame of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intellectual\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">literati<\/a>\u201d (Byrd A8).<sup>1<\/sup> Her poetry and plays often feature representations of African American and Native American life and speculate on the ways these groups\u2019 interactions with each other influenced cultural and racial identity formation.
