(We\u2019re not the best conversationalists.) She asked, &#8220;If there&#8217;s no biological basis for race, then why do some medications work better for people of some races than others?&#8221; Which is a good question. Since we had a long drive ahead of us, I stalled by pointing out the window at a pretend elk and changed the subject, then did some furious <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_(verb)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Googling<\/a> when we stopped for gas.<\/p>\n<p>For hundreds of years, we\u2019ve been told that each race is a discrete group of people defined by specific genetic and biological differences. As a result, we\u2019ve used race as a way of explaining observed differences in health: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sickle_cell_disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sickle Cell Anemia<\/a> is considered a black person disease; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cystic_fibrosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cystic Fibrosis<\/a> is considered a white person disease; we\u2019ve said people of color are genetically pre-disposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diabetes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diabetes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hypertension\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high blood pressure<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Obesity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">obesity<\/a>, and other chronic conditions; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1687161\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FDA has approved drugs for different races<\/a>; and through \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/06\/19\/opinion\/the-first-racebased-medicine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">race-based medicine<\/a>\u201d we\u2019ve established care standards (<a href=\"https:\/\/mic.com\/articles\/185387\/pearson-issues-apology-for-publishing-racist-theories-about-treating-pain-in-nursing-textbook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">such as responding to patients\u2019 pain<\/a>) that vary by race.
