Healy was designed to support a wide range of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arctic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arctic<\/a> research activities with more than 4,200 square feet of scientific laboratory space, numerous electronic sensor systems, oceanographic winches, and accommodations for a science team. (Chief Petty Officer Matt Masaschi \/ U.S. Coast Guard)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They call it \u201cice liberty,\u201d a tradition during the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/US_coast_gaurd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coast Guard\u2019s<\/a> maritime missions in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arctic_Ocean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arctic waters<\/a>. At a thick ice floe, the crew gets to disembark for a brief moment of freedom from the vessel confines. Some play touch football, or bring hockey gear for the occasion. Others just take a stroll.<\/p>\n<p>This year, there was no suitable ice to be found during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificarea.uscg.mil\/Our-Organization\/Cutters\/cgcHealy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coast Guard Cutter Healy\u2019s<\/a> northern journey off <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alaska\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alaska<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada<\/a>. So the event was canceled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ice_floe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">floes<\/a> had <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Melt_pond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">melt ponds<\/a> with holes in them like Swiss cheese,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kenneth-boda-48a8227\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Capt. Kenneth Boda<\/a>, commander of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seattle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seattle<\/a>-based icebreaker. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t get the right floe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boda spoke via telephone during a port call in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boston<\/a>. The vessel is deep into a marathon voyage that began July 10 as the 420-foot ship pulled away from its berth at the Coast Guard base in downtown Seattle and traveled into Arctic waters off Alaska. (U.S. Coast Guard)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the voyage, the Healy crew traversed some of the waters cruised more than a century ago by their vessel\u2019s namesake, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/oceanexplorer.noaa.gov\/explorations\/19bear\/background\/healy\/healy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hell Roaring\u201d Mike Healy<\/a>, captain of the wooden-hulled <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Bear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Revenue Cutter Bear<\/a> from 1886 to 1895.<\/p>\n<p>Healy, who was born into slavery, is a legendary figure in U.S. maritime history.
