Ellsworth\/Courtesy of OperaCr\u00e9ole<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NPR embedded audio player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/player\/embed\/530085480\/530447159\" width=\"100%\" height=\"290\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>For many people, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Orleans<\/a> is practically synonymous with jazz; it&#8217;s the birthplace of both the music and many of its leading lights, from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Armstrong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louis Armstrong<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christian_aTunde_Adjuah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah<\/a>. But now, one organization is working to draw attention to the city&#8217;s history of opera music.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/operacreole.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OperaCr\u00e9ole<\/a>, an opera company founded in New Orleans, is resurrecting music written by local composers of color and others who&#8217;ve been left out of the overwhelmingly white, male canon. The company&#8217;s latest production, <em>La Flamenca<\/em>, is by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creole_peoples#Louisiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creole<\/a> composer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lucien-L%C3%A9on_Guillaume_Lambert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lucien-L\u00e9on Guillaume Lambert<\/a>, whose father was born in New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p>OperaCr\u00e9ole founder and mezzo-soprano <a href=\"https:\/\/givonnajoseph.webs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Givonna Joseph<\/a> joined NPR&#8217;s Lulu Garcia-Navarro to discuss <em>La Flamenca<\/em> and her company&#8217;s work in general.
