Excluding, for the sake of argument, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Mets\" target=\"_blank\">Mets<\/a> prospect <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lastings_Milledge\" target=\"_blank\">Lastings Milledge<\/a>, now with the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington_nationals\" target=\"_blank\">Nationals<\/a>, where did that leave the captain of the New York Yankees, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Derek_Jeter\" target=\"_blank\">Derek Jeter<\/a>?\u00a0 <strong>In a 2005 interview with the <em>St. Petersburg Times<\/em>, Jeter handled the subject of his race with characteristic, media-savvy care: &#8220;My Dad is black, my Mom is Irish, and I&#8217;m Catholic, so I hear everything. I&#8217;m in New York and there are all different people, all races and religions. I can relate to everyone.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since his 1996 rookie season, Derek Jeter has not only played shortstop for the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Yankees\" target=\"_blank\">New York Yankees<\/a>, he has parlayed his ability to &#8220;relate to everyone&#8221; into what advertisers hope will translate into an ability to &#8220;sell to everyone,&#8221; working overtime as a pitching machine.\u00a0 Most of the products Jeter pitched before 2006 were ones generally associated with baseball and conventionally endorsed by its players-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nike,_Inc.\" target=\"_blank\">Nike<\/a> sneakers, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gatorade\" target=\"_blank\">Gatorade<\/a> sports drink, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ford_Motor_Company\" target=\"_blank\">Ford<\/a> cars and trucks, and a variety of breakfast and snack foods, including <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ritz_Crackers\" target=\"_blank\">Ritz crackers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Post_Cereals\" target=\"_blank\">Post cereals<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skippy_(peanut_butter)\" target=\"_blank\">Skippy peanut butter<\/a>, and, <strong>perhaps inevitably, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oreo\" target=\"_blank\">Oreos<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0 Not so surprisingly for one of the most generously compensated players in the game, Jeter also endorsed a financial institution, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FleetBoston_Financial\" target=\"_blank\">Fleet Bank<\/a>. In his role as a well-known man about town, not altogether unfamiliar to the readers of New York&#8217;s gossip columns, Jeter also appeared with his equally famous, generous compensator, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Steinbrenner\" target=\"_blank\">George M. Steinbrenner<\/a>, in a Visa commercial.
