But it\u2019s overwhelmingly unsupported as a pan-ethnic identity word.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latinx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latinx<\/a> is a buzzword for individuals of Latin American origin in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a>, yet the use of \u201cLatinx\u201d as a noun to identify people of Latino and Hispanic heritage is not universally welcomed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOoooo, you\u2019ve entered the dangerous territory of \u2018identity politics,\u2019\u201d said Rice University professor <a href=\"https:\/\/arthistory.rice.edu\/affiliated-faculty\/luis-duno-gottberg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luis Duno-Gottberg<\/a> on a social media post where a journalist asked for opinions about the use of Latinx.<\/p>\n<p>The word \u201cLatinx\u201d and its plural \u201cLatinxs\u201d spark passionate discussions, with supporters asserting it is more inclusive than the predominant \u201cLatinos\u201d or \u201cHispanic\u201d to group the multifaceted identities of people who trace their origins to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin_America\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latin America<\/a> and Spanish-speaking countries.<\/p>\n<p>Some analysts trace the original use of Latinx to the mid-2000s when it began to appear in web searches. The word started a slow trend upward in June 2016, according to Google Trends data.
