But in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burlington,_New_Jersey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Burlington, New Jersey<\/a>, and across the country, nine generations of his family helped keep it alive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew that our great-great-great grandfather \u2014 I forget how many greats \u2014 had <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Washington%27s_crossing_of_the_Delaware_River\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crossed the Delaware<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Washington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington<\/a>,\u201d Fox Long said. \u201cIt was the story that my mom had told, and it was also passed down to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery Fourth of July, it was always a conversation piece,\u201d said Murray, from her home in Philadelphia. &#8220;How could it not be?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cromwell was a decorated hero of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Jersey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Jersey<\/a>, they knew, a representative of an American history that had gone unheralded for much of this nation\u2019s lifetime: an African American patriot of the Revolutionary War&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Against this backdrop, Cromwell was born on the farm of tavernkeeper John Hutchin on May 24, 1753, in present-day <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burlington_County,_New_Jersey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Burlington County<\/a>, an area whose taverns \u201cBurlington Biographies\u201d author Richard L. Thompson described as a hotbed for American revolutionary sentiment.<\/p>\n<p>Cromwell\u2019s parentage is not known with certainty, but multiple records refer to him as being of mixed race, likely African and white heritage. Late in life, he referred to himself as being \u201cin the family of John Hutchin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cromwell joined the New Jersey militia in 1775, where he was listed as \u201cIndian,\u201d leading to speculation he may have had Native American heritage.
