The recipient of the Costa book of the year for <\/em>The Kids<\/a>, Hannah Lowe<\/a> may have just about achieved her goal, learns Anna Lamche<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

TRACKING down a physical copy of Hannah Lowe\u2019s\u00a0The Kids<\/a><\/em>\u00a0has been difficult since the poet won the Costa Book Award<\/a> last week, a fact she attributes more to a \u201cnational shortage of paper\u201d than to her publisher\u2019s surprise at her unexpected win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hannah won the prestigious prize last Tuesday for her book of sonnets, a beautiful and haunting ode to teaching and childhood. Her collection reflects on the junctures between education and the superstructures of history, class and race \u2013 the result is a tightly rendered meditation on human experience, spanning birth to death and grief to laughter, often within a matter of lines…<\/p>\n\n\n

…Born to a \u201chalf Jamaican, half Chinese\u201d father, Hannah\u2019s own experience \u2013 she recalls being called \u201cwhite wog\u201d at school in one poem \u2013 allows her to relate to the alienation of her own black and diasporan students in the wake of the 7\/7 bombings<\/a> and beyond. The Kids<\/em> continually demands we consider \u201cthe stakes when teachers rarely look like those\/they teach\u201d….<\/p>\n\n\n
