Born in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlanta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atlanta<\/a> in 1893, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_Francis_White\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[Walter] White<\/a> was defined as Black by Southern laws and customs. Yet his enslaved forebears were raped by white owners, making him, according to family history, a great-grandson of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Henry_Harrison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Henry Harrison<\/a>. With fair skin, blue eyes and blond hair, he could easily have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed as white<\/a> and ensured himself a better life.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, White worked doggedly to force change. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ajbaime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[A. J.] Baime<\/a> depicts him as a superhero with a secret identity. In the 1920s he lived in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harlem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harlem<\/a> as a Black man, taking on a crucial role in the fledgling <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NAACP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NAACP<\/a> while also fostering the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harlem_Renaissance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harlem Renaissance<\/a> by nurturing Black artists like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Langston_Hughes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Langston Hughes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Claude_McKay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Claude McKay<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zora_Neale_Hurston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zora Neale Hurston<\/a>. He invited them to his high-profile parties, introduced them to white publishers like Mark Van Doren and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alfred_A._Knopf_Sr.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alfred Knopf<\/a>.
