{"id":63119,"date":"2022-02-17T02:24:40","date_gmt":"2022-02-17T02:24:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=63119"},"modified":"2022-02-22T22:27:06","modified_gmt":"2022-02-22T22:27:06","slug":"moses-roper-the-fugitive-from-slavery-cast-aside-by-british-abolitionists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=63119","title":{"rendered":"Moses Roper: the fugitive from slavery cast aside by British abolitionists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/feb\/16\/moses-roper-fugitive-from-slavery-cast-aside-british-abolitionists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Moses Roper: the fugitive from slavery cast aside by British abolitionists<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a><br \/>\n2022-02-16<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/markbrown14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mark Brown<\/strong><\/a>, North of England correspondent<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/feb\/16\/moses-roper-fugitive-from-slavery-cast-aside-british-abolitionists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 95%; border: 0px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/39b6a8d1b778d26b75329769682798cffcafe9fc\/0_15_669_401\/master\/669.jpg?width=620&amp;quality=45&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;dpr=2&amp;s=850672eec792b5a879b56e67e437c99e\" \/><\/a><figcaption style=\"font-size: x-small; width: 95%; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moses_Roper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moses Roper<\/a>, painted in 1839, was the first fugitive enslaved person to lecture in the cause of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abolitionism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abolition<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Kingdom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Britain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ireland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ireland<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Historians argue Roper\u2019s story could have helped end <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slavery_in_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US slavery<\/a> earlier but supporters turned on him<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In his day, the 19th-century fugitive from slavery <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moses_Roper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moses Roper<\/a> was a well-known public figure who toured <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Kingdom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Britain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ireland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ireland<\/a> telling gripped and shocked audiences about his horrific experiences in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florida<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today he is largely overlooked but, two Newcastle University academics argue, the important story of this fascinating man represents a \u201clost opportunity\u201d for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jan\/23\/eighty-years-late-groundbreaking-work-on-slave-economy-is-finally-published-in-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">British abolition movement<\/a> to have helped end <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slavery_in_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slavery in the US<\/a> earlier.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BruceHistorian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bruce Baker<\/a>, a reader in American history, said it was surprising how little attention had been paid to Roper, given he was a pioneer. \u201cHistorians haven\u2019t really paid a lot of attention to Roper, even though he was the first fugitive slave to lecture in the cause of abolition in Britain and Ireland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Baker and his colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/elll\/people\/profile\/fionnghualasweeney.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fionnghuala Sweeney<\/a>, a reader in American and Black Atlantic Literatures, have now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=63114\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published a paper in an academic journal<\/a> and are working on a full biography of Roper. They aim to rescue him from obscurity, painting a picture of a radical, driven man ruined by the British abolition movement that turned against him.<\/p>\n<p>Roper fled enslavement in Florida in 1834 and, fearing for his safety, made his way to Britain, where he was supported by churchmen and abolitionists.
