But a new study finds many people of MENA descent do not see themselves as white, and neither do many white people.<br \/>\n<em>OsakaWayne Studios\/Getty Images<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There&#8217;s a reality about race in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S.<\/a> that has confounded many people of Middle Eastern or North African descent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/21211671-1997-revisions-to-omb-statistical-policy-directive-no-15-race-and-ethnic-standards-for-federal-statistics-and-administrative-reporting#document\/p19\/a2081999\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The federal government officially categorizes<\/a> people with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/21218285-2020-census-state-pl-94-171-redistricting-summary-file-technical-documentation#document\/p232\/a2082431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">origins in Lebanon, Iran, Egypt and other countries in the MENA region<\/a> as white.<\/p>\n<p>But that racial identity has not matched the discrimination in housing, at work and through other parts of daily life that many say they have faced.<\/p>\n<p>Younger people of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MENA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MENA<\/a> descent have &#8220;had a plethora of different experiences that made them feel that some of their experiences were actually closer to communities of color in the U.S.,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nedamaghbouleh.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neda Maghbouleh<\/a>, an associate professor of sociology at the University of Toronto, who has conducted research on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>The paradox has been hard to show through data&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/02\/17\/1079181478\/us-census-middle-eastern-white-north-african-mena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. census sees Middle Eastern and North African people as white.
