And some see themselves in the duality she has embraced.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eileen_Gu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eileen Gu<\/a>, the 18-year-old Olympic gold medalist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Freestyle_skiing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freestyle skier<\/a> who was born in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Francisco<\/a> but competed for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/China\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China<\/a>, Chinese Americans have lots of opinions.<\/p>\n<p>There are those who love her, moved by her ability to soar over treacherous slopes with ease. Others are inspired by her efforts to navigate the uneasy political tension between two countries and cultures. Some believe she chose to represent China simply to cash in on the lucrative opportunities it has afforded her.<\/p>\n<p>But like her or not, many Chinese Americans interviewed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Region\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York region<\/a> this week agreed on one thing: When Ms. Gu says, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/03\/sports\/olympics\/eileen-gu-china-freeski.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as she often does<\/a>, \u201cWhen I\u2019m in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S.<\/a>, I\u2019m American, but when I\u2019m in China, I\u2019m Chinese,\u201d it resonates with them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what I\u2019m seeing is somebody who isn\u2019t afraid to love her identities and share that with people,\u201d said Sarah Belle Lin, 28, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harlem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harlem<\/a> resident. \u201cI think it\u2019s so brave, actually, for her to speak about that on a public platform.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/18\/nyregion\/eileen-gu-chinese-american.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The critical crossfire Ms. Gu has faced has implications that go far beyond the Olympic slopes, Chinese Americans say.
