Later in her career, facing the limitations Black Americans experienced, she began to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> pass as white<\/a>. <em>COURTESY OF THE AUTHORS<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Librarian Louise Butler Walker \u201935 took desperate measures to survive in a racist society.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>During the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Depression_in_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great Depression<\/a>, Louise Butler Walker \u201935 completed her bachelor\u2019s in French and earned a library diploma from what is now <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Wisconsin%E2%80%93Madison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UW\u2013Madison\u2019s<\/a> Information School. Walker had been an outstanding student, graduating <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phi_Beta_Kappa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Phi Beta Kappa<\/a>, and completed a prestigious internship at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Library_Association\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Library Association<\/a> (ALA) headquarters in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago<\/a>. The school\u2019s career placement office said her assets were her \u201cbrilliant mind\u201d and \u201cexcellent academic background.\u201d Her limitations, they said, were \u201cracial (she is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=451\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mulatto<\/a>).\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/onwisconsin.uwalumni.com\/features\/running-from-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 80%; display: block; border: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/onwisconsin.uwalumni.com\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/walker-newsclipping.jpg\" \/><\/a><figcaption style=\"width: 80%; display: block; font-size: x-small; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">As a local librarian, Walker (at right in photo) became a prominent figure in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_Atkinson,_Wisconsin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fort Atkinson<\/a>. <em>COURTESY OF THE AUTHORS<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Although Walker was not privy to the egregious behind-the-scenes machinations and handwringing about her being Black, she knew that her race was detrimental to her career, so she eventually <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed as white<\/a> to work as a librarian in rural <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wisconsin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wisconsin<\/a>.
