Can an exhibition start to shift the negative truths of the history of a place?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theastergates.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Theaster Gates<\/a> has exemplified the meaning of social practice in his work, creating new models for building community while bringing awareness to both the historical and present-day struggles of black <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America<\/a>. In <em>Amalgam<\/em>, his first solo museum exhibition in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/France\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">France<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palais_de_Tokyo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palais de Tokyo<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paris<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago<\/a>-based artist shed light on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malaga_Island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malaga Island<\/a>, a 41-acre island located at the mouth of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Meadows_River\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Meadows River<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Casco_Bay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Casco Bay<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maine<\/a>. The island was a fishing hamlet, home to an interracial community born out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Civil War<\/a> until 1912, when the Maine governor <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frederick_W._Plaisted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frederick Plaisted<\/a> forced its poorest population, a group of about 45 mixed-race individuals, off the island. Some relocated in Maine, while others were involuntarily committed to psychiatric institutions.
