All three are <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Hispanic_and_Latino_Americans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afro Latinos<\/a> who live in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco_Bay_Area\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bay Area<\/a>. <em>(Blanca Torres\/KQED)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alamaroakland.com\/the-chef\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nelson German<\/a>, the chef and owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alamaroakland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alaMar<\/a>, a seafood restaurant in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oakland,_California\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oakland<\/a>, remembers the day a Black family asked a staffer about the Black owner they had heard about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a Black-owned restaurant,\u201d he recalled the staffer telling the family. \u201cThis is a Dominican-owned restaurant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hearing about that interaction was a turning point for German. As a Black Dominican American, German, 41, realized he hadn\u2019t done enough to educate those around him about his Blackness and the importance of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are Black. We are part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African_diaspora\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">African diaspora<\/a>. We just speak Spanish,\u201d German said. \u201cThe African continent influenced the world. We should embrace that, and really give tribute to it now, because there&#8217;s a lot of people who had to shed their blood and sacrifice their lives for us to be in this position.
